Graham/Mebane Lake, formerly know as Quaker Creek Lake, is 650-acre reservoir is situated northeast of the town of Haw River on Quaker and Back creeks with access off SR 1927 (Alamance Co.). The Wildlife Commission has managed the fish populations since 1968 with special interest devoted to the channel catfish fishery. A channel catfish cage culture program was ongoing at the lake from the mid 1970s to the mid 1980s. The lake supports one of the best catfish populations in the area with the lake record channel catfish (caught in 1985) weighing in at 19 3/4 pounds. In 1994, the small 150-acre impoundment was increased to its present size and the expansion spawned one of the better bass populations in the Piedmont. The lake consistently produces trophy bass (hundreds of pictures on the marina wall) throughout the year with the lake record largemouth weighing in at 12 pounds. Other species sought after are crappie and redear (shellcracker) sunfish. Crappie fishing is considered fair by local anglers and the best time of the year for shellcrackers is when they are bedding. Fish attractors have been installed to provide cover and improve angling success.
